Key 2027 figures from the SSA
| Figure | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| COLA increase | 2.8% | 3.6% |
| Average retired worker | $2,095 | $2,170 |
| Average disabled worker (SSDI) | $1,642 | $1,701 |
| Aged widow(er), alone | $1,936 | $2,005 |
| Maximum federal SSI (individual) | $994 | $1,029 |
| Maximum federal SSI (couple) | $1,491 | $1,544 |
| Maximum taxable earnings | $184,500 | $192,300 |
| Medicare Part B standard premium | $202.90 | Not yet announced (projected $209.50) |
Worked example: the average retired worker
Start: $2,095 a month in 2026. Apply the 3.6% COLA: $2,095 × 1.036 = $2,170.42, paid as about $2,170 a month — a raise of $75 a month, $900 a year. If Part B is deducted, the take-home estimate goes from $2,095 − $202.90 = $1,892.10 today to roughly $2,170 − $209.50 (projected) = $1,960.50 in 2027 — about $68 more actually landing in the bank each month. First increased payment: January 2027, on the Wednesday set by the worker's birth date.
COLA history: 2020–2027

| 2022 | 5.9% | 2026 | 2.8% |
| 2023 | 8.7% | 2027 | 3.6% |
The 2027 adjustment of 3.6% is above the 20-year average of about 2.6% — the largest since 2023's inflation-driven 8.7%.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Social Security COLA for 2027?
The Social Security Administration announced on October 14, 2026 that the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 is 3.6%. It applies to Social Security retirement, disability, survivors and spouse benefits, and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
How do I calculate my 2027 benefit?
Multiply your current monthly benefit by 1.036. For example, $1,500 becomes $1,554, and $2,000 becomes $2,072. The calculator on this page does the math for you, including an estimated take-home amount after Medicare Part B.
When will I get my first increased check?
SSI recipients receive the first increased payment on December 31, 2026. Social Security beneficiaries are paid in January 2027 on the second, third or fourth Wednesday, depending on their day of birth: born 1st–10th, January 13; 11th–20th, January 20; 21st–31st, January 27.
How much is the average increase?
The SSA estimates the average retired worker's benefit rises by about $75 a month, from $2,095 to $2,170. The average disabled worker's benefit rises from $1,642 to $1,701, and an aged widow or widower's from $1,936 to $2,005.
Will Medicare Part B eat up my raise?
Part of it, possibly. The 2027 Part B premium has not been announced yet; the Medicare Trustees projected $209.50 a month, up from $202.90 in 2026 — about a $6.60 difference, which would still leave most of the average $75 raise intact. The 'hold harmless' rule also protects many beneficiaries from a net decrease.
What is the maximum SSI payment in 2027?
The maximum federal SSI payment for 2027 is $1,029 a month for an individual and $1,544 for a couple, up from $994 and $1,491 in 2026. Some states add a supplement.
When will the SSA tell me my exact new amount?
The SSA posts your exact 2027 amount in your my Social Security account in late November 2026 and mails the official COLA notice during December 2026.
